Mining

"For a miner must have the greatest skill in his work ..."
~Georgius Agricola (from De Re Metallica 1556)

Mining is a continuing quest to meet the worldwide demand for material commodities. However, few of us can fully appreciate the level of commitment in terms of time, work, and expense that goes into exploration, property evaluation, start-up, operation, and eventual closure of mining operations. We are both aware of and sensitive to these factors in today's changing market.

Since our founding in 1979, we have provided specialized consulting services to various mining and resource exploration clients. We understand the business of mining operations from facility permitting to water resources management and process design. We have a special group of trained mining project specialists who know mining operations and have requisite MSHA and OSHA training to get the job done in a safe and efficient manner.

Among the wide variety of mining related consulting services that we offer are:

  • Discharge permitting including aquifer protection and NPDES;
  • Process and geotechnical engineering;
  • Geochemical assessment;
  • Water resource evaluations for mine dewatering, water supply, and water quality;
  • Slope stability analyses;
  • Environment site investigations;
  • Groundwater flow and solute transport modeling;

  • We obtained the first Aquifer Protection Permit (APP) for an open-pit mining operation in Arizona. We successfully negotiated favorable permitting terms with the agency for long-term compliance monitoring, placement of points of compliance, and a compliance schedule for implementation of Best Available Demonstrated Control Technology (BADCT).

  • At a smelter site, we designed an innovative wastewater recycling underdrain system for the slag cooling pits for the plant site flash smelting furnace. The design provided greater cooling capacity and solved a process water shortage that the plant was experiencing. The slag cooling pit now marks the BADCT standard for all mines employing similar processes.
